Project Description:
Our group wanted to create a didactic interactive app that focused on the ways bug bites can present on different colored skin. Users are able to click through multiple clinical photos to identify their bites and read relevant information on symptom onset and duration. Users are also able to see and recognize an illustrated image of the bug that could have potentially bit them as well as an animated map of the United States showing the bug’s habitat range. Finally, viewers are able to review treatment options for peace of mind.
Learning Goals and Audience:
Our intended audience are people who like to venture outdoors and/or explore America’s National Parks. A great use of this interactive app would be to feature it as a reference on a national park’s website so impacted visitors can easily identify their bites and seek the relevant medical attention. The app is designed to be accessible to users of all ages and special attention was given to increase accessibility to users who have darker skin. We found that many of the current centralized online literature and clinical images for bug bites primarily feature bites on light skin tones so we designed this app to particularly address that learning gap.
